Puzzled about the CCP?

So you’ve just realized . . . "YIKES! Fall has arrived and I need to update my continuing competence goal! I need to start thinking about a goal for 2019! Do I have to complete external feedback this year? What is external feedback anyway?"

Well, here’s the scoop.

When you’re renewing as registered for 2019, you will update your 2018 goal (add your learning activities and your self-reflection) AND you’ll set a goal for 2019. No surprises here, you do this every year.

Do you need to complete a Self-Assessment Tool (SAT) this year? Maybe…

  • This needs to be updated every 3 years. You can either update your existing self-assessment, or you can create a new one. The best part is that you can do this anytime throughout the year – no need to wait until renewal!

What about external feedback? Why do we need to do it anyway?

  • Our CCP goal setting/reflection process is quite subjective and well, humans aren’t always great at self-reflection. We’re notorious for either over or under estimating our skills. External feedback was added to the CCP as a way to obtain some objective, quantitative insight related to your goal, learning activities and reflection.

External feedback can be completed any time during the year and leaving it until the last minute could add complications you don’t need – procrastination is not recommended!

External feedback is required every 3 years.

  • There’s a bit of a formula to figure out if you’re due. At the risk of dating myself, the formula appears almost as complex as building a flux capacitor. But here it is in a nutshell:
    • You need to complete an external feedback every 3rd time you renew as registered (renewals don’t need to be consecutive) AND
    • You have a current goal AND
    • You haven’t completed an external feedback in the past two years (like I said…flux capacitor…).
  • For example, you initially registered in September 2015. You renewed as registered for the 2016 year (this is done at the end of 2015, but it’s for the 2016 year). Then you renewed as registered for 2017. And then in 2018 you renewed as non-practicing, but at the end of 2018 you’ll be renewing as registered for 2019. When are you due? (This could be a test!). Let’s work through it:
    • 2016 – first renewal as registered (yes, you complete the renewal in fall 2015, but it’s for the 2016 year)
    • 2017 – second renewal as registered (done in the fall of 2016)
    • 2018 – non-practicing
    • 2019 – third renewal as registered (done in the fall of 2018). You’ll set a goal for the 2019 year. DUE BY THE END OF 2019. (it’s your third renewal as registered and you’ll then have a goal which is set at the time of renewal)
  • And just to throw a monkey wrench in, if you were keen and completed an external feedback in 2016 or 2017, you won’t be due yet!

  • So what if you don’t complete your external feedback by December 31st of the year you’re due?
    • Well, your full CCP submission will automatically be referred to the Continuing Competence Committee for audit. There’s a few avenues the committee can take; first they’ll likely require you to complete your external feedback within a set timeframe. Once that’s submitted, they’ll review your entire CCP submission (goals, learning activities, reflection and goals for the next year). At that time, they may decide that your submission is adequate. Or, they could determine that you need to resubmit portions or all of your CCP. If you still don’t complete the requirement, the College may press forward with a complaint of unprofessional conduct. Best to get it done!
